The Grant Conzaman Award: May 31, 2026

10/31/2024 2:58:00 PM

In November, 2006, Walsh Jesuit's Athletic Booster Club established the Grant Conzaman Student Athlete Scholarship Award, which celebrates and acknowledges the efforts of the school's longtime athletic director. "In reflecting on the qualities required to receive the scholarship, we examined the life of Grant Conzaman," said Jim Coe, then-president of the Athletic Booster Club, who explained that eligible students would be judged on criteria such as work ethic and desire to be a team player. "Grant is never the man out front, wanting fame. Rather, he is the man behind the scenes, quietly doing the right thing. His effort and attention to detail, in fact, have allowed great things to happen with the athletic program at Walsh Jesuit. A scholarship in his honor should reflect these qualities, recognizing athletes who allow great things to happen and who work behind the scenes to ensure their team's success".

This yearly award is given to TWO senior athletes, one male and one female, who demonstrate their value to the team both on and off the field. They are often the unsung heroes of their sport, contributing to team spirit, camaraderie, and lifting the team up to a higher level through their daily actions and examples. These athletes are nominated at the end of the season by their coach and the winners are chosen by the Walsh Jesuit Booster Club Board. The goal of this award, a monetary college scholarship, is to acknowledge the exemplary contribution of these athletes to the teams of Walsh Jesuit High School.

2025 Recipients

Zach Gregan '25

Men's Wrestling

Zach Gregan exemplifies the spirit and work ethic that the Grant Conzaman Award was created to honor. A dedicated member of the WJ wrestling team, Zach has consistently demonstrated the kind of behind-the-scenes commitment that builds strong teams and sets the stage for others to shine. He doesn't seek the spotlight—instead, he embraces the grind, shows up every day with purpose, and does the little things right, whether anyone is watching or not. His consistency, humility, and team-first mentality have made him an invaluable part of the program. What sets Zach apart is his unwavering attention to detail and willingness to do whatever is needed to help the team succeed. Whether it's staying late to clean up the wrestling room, pushing his teammates during practice, or mentoring younger wrestlers without being asked, Zach leads through action. His example sets the tone for what it means to be a selfless contributor. Just like Grant Conzaman, Zach isn't driven by accolades—he's driven by a deep respect for the sport and a desire to lift those around him. Zach's quiet leadership and relentless work ethic have not gone unnoticed. While others may earn the headlines, it's athletes like Zach who form the foundation of any great team. His commitment to doing the right thing—day in and day out—mirrors the legacy of Grant Conzaman, making him a truly deserving recipient of this award.

Nikki Lopez '25

Women's Lacrosse

Nikki Lopez has been a quiet leader on our team for the past 3 years. As a senior, she was unanimously selected as a team captain and has taken on that position extremely well throughout the off-season and early part of this spring. She's the hardest working player we have and does it without needing the credit or praise. Her contributions on and off the field have put the team in the position for success each season. Although she doesn't get nearly the credit she deserves on the "stat sheet", Nikki's role on the team is critical to our success and she takes great pride in the details.

Alyiah Castillos '24
Attending Miami University
Alyiah Castillo was a captain of the 2023 women's soccer State Championship winning team.  Alyiah was an inspiring leader who was selfless, kind, compassionate, and who always did the right thing.  Her intentions were always motivated by what was best for everyone else—even when those decisions and recommendations came at her own expense.  She was a calculated, calm, and moral teammate who was always there for her teammates when they needed her most.  There is no question that Alyiah's leadership on and off the field were integral to our successes last season.  Of the four captains on that team, Alyiah was the one that the other players looked to for strength and guidance.  She truly embodied the "Men and women for others" principles that are the foundation of the Jesuit education.  I can think of no more deserving of a person than Alyiah Castillo for this award.

Dominick Calleri '24
Attending Ohio State University
Dominick Calleri has been a three-sport athlete at Walsh for his four years at WJ.  He excelled on the ice rink, the golf course, and the lacrosse field.  He played varsity hockey all four years capping off his high school career by leading the team in scoring, making First Team All-League for the GLHL, all while having the hockey team's highest GPA for the second year in a row.  In addition, Dominick was team captain his senior year, a position his teammates selected him.  He was a tremendous competitor, leader, and sportsman.  In addition to his achievements on the ice, Dominick was also a captain on the lacrosse team and earned all-league honors last year.  He consistently showed the work ethic and discipline in athletics but just as impressive is his track record in the classroom.  Dominick maintained a 4.0+ GPA every year at WJ, taking many AP classes along the way.  Dominick was a true example of what it means to be a student athlete and balances the classroom duties with the athletic duties extraordinarily well.
